If you have watched my news reports over the years on KCAL-TV and KCBS-TV you know that I have always been a fan of buying high-end merchandise and jewelry in pawn shops.  On TV I showed you how high end and luxury jewelers go to pawn shops to buy diamond and precious stone jewelry and then reset those gems into new jewelry that is sold in their high-end stores.  There is no such thing as an "old diamond."  And pawn shops can also give you a fast and easy way to sell your gold and jewelry or to get a loan.

Update June 20, 2016  Graduation and wedding season is here and you can save a lot of money on pricey jewelry and watches by buying at a pawn shop.  A lot of people think pawn shops are seedy and are filled with used guitars and worn out stereo systems.  But the reality is that pawn shops in high income neighborhoods can be loaded the high end merchandise including diamond jewelry, classic Swiss watches, even gemstones and designer jewelry.

When I was a reporter with KCAL9 I regularly would do stories about pawn shop deals and I will never forget the time I went to a Beverly Hills pawn shop and the owner took me to "the back room" where there were jewelers from several high-end Rodeo Drive boutiques buying diamond and gold jewelry from the pawn shop.  And what were they going to do with the diamond jewelry and the precious stones including the diamonds?  Well, they were going to reset the diamonds and the stones into new settings and sell the "new" (or should I say "recreated jewelry") at marked-up prices in their own Rodeo Drive big-name stores.

So why not do what the Rodeo Drive big-name stores do?  Why not go to the pawn shops in Beverly Hills and save yourself the Rodeo Drive mark-up and buy the out-of-pawn jewelry direct from the pawn shop yourself?  And then have it re-set and your "new diamond ring" will be just as "new" as if it came from one of those Rodeo Drive boutiques.

Update May 6, 2014  Maxferd Jewelry & Loan on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills is safe, convenient and offers great deals on estate jewelry and collateral loans.  What really impressed me is that Maxferd offers to new customers 0% interest for the first 30 days on loans up to $2,500 (see the store for details).  And for loans of $2,500 and more there is only 1% interest for the first 30 days.  There is also a $5 processing fee.  So this means that if you are a new customer, and need a $1,000 loan, your total cost will be $1,005 when you redeem your collateral within thirty-days.

Maxferd also buys fine jewelry and high-end watches and they also sell fine jewelry and high-end watches.  On our recent visit there were watches by Rolex and Breitlng and Cartier and Chopard for sale, and jewelry by Tiffany was available.  While many jewelers sell pre-owned and estate jewelry, you can save 40% more by buying at Maxferd.

One of the secrets of the jewelry business is that the high-end stores shop at stores like Maxferd and then reset the diamonds and mark up their prices dramatically.  So you can shop the way the "savvy money" shops and buy direct from Maxferd.

If you need a loan remember that your transaction is strictly private and confidential and there is no credit check.  You only need collateral and your personal credit history doesn't matter.  Our Best Buys TV Show report is below.

Update January 31, 2012  What really impressed me about the owners of A Cash Buyer Jewelry & Loan in Tustin, California is that they are fully aware that their business is only as good as their reputation.  And so, they try to do everything possible to have the best reputation when dealing with buyers and sellers and with customers who come to their boutique for a cash loan.

A Cash Buyer Jewelry & Loan buys gold, silver, coins, jewelry, diamonds, art and watches and they keep track of market conditions so that they can offer the best prices to those with items to sell.  And because they keep pace with market conditions, they offer the best prices when they sell estate jewelry to customers who walk into their shop.

You will find fine art by Norman Rockwell and Salvador Dali and more great, contemporary artists.  There are high quality watches for sale with top names such as Rolex, Cartier, Patek, IWC, Omega and more.  If you are looking for the best prices on classic jewelry and estate jewelry this is the place to shop for extraordinary finds and deals.  You can save fifty percent or more on diamonds and diamond engagement rings because this boutique doesn't have the overhead that mall stores have.  There is plenty of convenient free parking, and you will feel comfortable buying and selling here with confidence and getting a loan if necessary.

What sets A Cash Buyer Jewelry & Loan apart from others is that this estate buyer makes house calls and they have an expert repair staff to be sure the high quality jewelry and watches are as close to perfection as possible when you buy it.  There are guarantees available on the watches so you can shop with complete confidence.

Update September 21, 2011  On our "Money and Loan Help" page is an article with some of the reasons why you should use a pawn shop for an emergency loan, and some reasons why you should not consider a pawn shop loan.  Most of all be sure you understand your obligations to repay the loan if you do decide to take this kind of loan.

Update August 12, 2011  I am now starting to see advertisements from pawn shops suggesting that you pawn your gold or pawn your silver instead of selling it.

The strategy behind this is that if you pawn your gold or pawn your silver you will still own it should prices rise so that you can sell it later for a higher price.  Well, that's basically a good idea.  But what happens if you need money now, and you pawn your gold or silver only to find out that prices decline sharply a month or three months from now?

The other factor you have to consider is the cost of the loan you are getting.  Pawn shops can charge very high interest rates -- and these rates are legal.  Not all pawn shops do charge high interest rates, so you have to shop around.  But the point is that if you pawn your gold or pawn your silver and prices remain flat for the next several months and then you decide to sell your gold or silver you will have lost money on the interest you paid the pawn shop.

And there is another factor to consider when you pawn gold or silver or anything-- what if you don't have the money to pay back the loan and redeem the item you pawned?  Then you could lose the item.

So, if you are pawning gold or silver because you need the money, ask yourself if you will be able to repay the loan later or you might as well just sell it now?

Update June 13, 2011  Wherever you go you see signs about buying gold and silver and so we had to do our own test.  It wasn't a comprehensive test because we didn't go to too many dealers but the few dealers we did shop opened our eyes to how it is important that you shop around.

We shopped around two items: a sterling silver dinner fork from Wallace Sterling from the design Grand Baroque, and a five ounce bar (or wafer) of .999 silver bullion fabricated by Pan American and the Northwest Mint.  We shopped them both today after the silver market closed so the price of silver was "set" and was not fluctuating as it could when the market was open.  The price of silver at the time was just under $35 an ounce.

The first dealer we shopped offered $71 for the Wallace Grand Baroque sterling silver dinner fork and commented that it contained about $91 worth of silver.  The second dealer we shopped offered only $25.  That's quite a spread.  The first dealer offered $34.65 per ounce or $173.25 for the five ounce bar of silver while the second dealer offered $150 or $30 an ounce.

We checked some prices on eBay at the same time:  the dinner fork on eBay in used condition had a "buy it now" price of $98.  We didn't spot the exact same 5-ounce silver bar on eBay but based on the price of silver it was worth about $175.

Update November 10, 2011  We believe that gold and jewelry companies and pawn shops are entitled to make a fair profit.  But we were surprised by the very low offer that a big store in Van Nuys gave to a consumer.  The consumer had a Tag Heuer watch to sell.  We know the consumer and the watch and the watch was in very good condition.  Online this watch sells as a new watch for about $1,800 and as a used watch it sells for about $700 to $800.  The consumer brought the watch to a store in Van Nuys and was very surprised by the low offer he received.  He was offered just $150.

But what surprised us even more was what the clerk at the store told the consumer.  The clerk said that the store looked up the value of the watch online and while it might fetch $700 or $800 in an online sale, the store could only pay $150 so it could make the profit that it needed.  Really?  A profit of $550 or $650 is what they needed?

We think a profit of 30% is fair in some cases.  In other cases a profit of 50% is fair.  And still in other cases a profit of 100% is fair.  But the offer made to this consumer could have given this company a profit of more than 450-percent.

By the way, the consumer did not sell his watch to them.
