Fido and Fluffy and Karma and Cosmo and Winky are probably very important members of your family and you want to get the best care and the best products for your pet -- and save money when possible.  Veterinary and grooming bills can be high, so can the cost of pet equipment and pet supplies and pet food, and treats so here we will show you ways you can save and take care of your dog, cat, fish, bird, Iguana or chinchillas.

Update April 8, 2017  All pet owners are very careful about selecting the best pet groomer. Not only do you want qualified groomers, but you want groomers that enjoy pets and you want to get service in a clean and safe place. Nothing is worse than paying for grooming only to find out that your pet puts on the brakes before walking in again, or finding that when your pet comes home there are fleas picked up at the groomer.

What we liked about Doggie Avenue in Burbank is a combination of friendliness, love of pets, and cleanliness. This place is really clean and we watched the groomers and enjoyed seeing how careful and caring they were as they handled the animals. We also enjoyed watching returning customers come to their location, and by the customers I mean the dogs. Every one of them happily walked in and no dog was putting on the brakes at the entrance.

Doggie Avenue calls itself a first-class dog grooming and specialty boutique, and it certainly is an unusual pet boutique with clothing for pets and their owners. There are also specialty pet foods and care items. Owner Donna Currie is a true pet lover and requires that all of her groomers and staff love pets too, which is why pets are so carefully cared for and handled here. Linda of Impeccable Pet Care offers in-home care
in Ventura, California including parts of Oxnard.

Update April 9, 2016  If you are in the Ventura, California area and need a reliable "drop in" pet sitter who will come to your house and feed and care for your pets in your home, give Linda of Impeccable Pet Care in Ventura a call at 707-980-0645 (cell phone) or text her at the same number. The local Ventura phone number is 805-620-0248 but you can't text her at that number.

You will be calling her directly and not a service that will dispatch others to your home. Yes, you will know exactly who is coming into your home to care for your pets.

Some of her services in your home include: feeding and visiting dogs, cats and other pets. Linda says she can provide multiple visits per day which is ideal for pet parents who are away from home for long hours because of their jobs, or because of trips.

Linda can also be sure your pets are getting their proper pills and medications and she even does pet injections.

She has several positive reviews on Yelp and look up Impeccable Pet Care to see them. Geographical area is limited to Ventura and parts of Oxnard in Ventura County. Her rates are "competitive" and reasonable. You can also email her at or call or text her for more information and to set up an appointment.

Update December 19, 2015  When I had my dog Karma, I was very worried about leaving him in a kennel when I had to make an out of town trip. Fortunately, I had a neighbor who happily looked after Karma when I was gone and all went well. But you might not be as lucky and you need to hire a stranger to come to your home to look after your pet instead of boarding your pet in a kennel. There are good kennels but keeping your pet at home is what many of us humans and pets would prefer.

That's what sparked my interest in which is a website service that allows pet sitters to sign up online so that customers in their area can contract with them. It sounded like a great service but with just a quick look at the site I found it might be more bark than bite when it comes to screening and approving of pet sitters.

Here's what I found on the website about the protections it offers pet owners:

"We do not endorse any persons who use or register for our Services, including Pet Care Service Providers. We do not investigate any user’s reputation, conduct, morality, criminal background, or verify the information that any user submits through the Services." does offer this advice to pet owners about checking out the pet care provider they want to do business with:

"We encourage Pet Owners, Pet Care Service Providers and Third Party Service providers to communicate with each other directly using the tools available on the Site and to review the profile pages of Pet Owners, Pet Care Service Providers and Third Party Service providers for feedback from other users."

At this point, it appears is nothing more than a listing service for pet care providers and the pet care providers pay a fee. But, does offer a limited reimbursement for injuries to pets while in the care of service providers:

"The Limited Reimbursement is limited to $25,000 (per pet) for injuries to Pet Owner’s pets in a Pet Care Service Provider’s care, and $5,000 for injuries to a Pet Care Service Provider’s own resident pets (for all such pets in the aggregate)."

There are exclusions and they appeared to be reasonable as well as reasonable requirements for making a claim. Offering the coverage makes sense for a company that is charging fees to pet care providers and stating the limits on its website probably puts a cap on even greater claims should injuries occur.

But the community of pet care providers is not purring like a contented cat. For example, one pet care provider told me that reluctantly refunded fees to two customers when the customers cancelled their appointments. A pet care provider also told me that when she stopped boarding pets in her home, but was still willing to provide services in the customers' homes, dropped her from their website and sent a warning to all of her customers that hinted about safety problems. In part, the letter said:

"At Rover, we take dog safety seriously--in fact, it’s our top priority. So we wanted to let you know that (name of service provider) will no longer be offering their services through As a result we’ve had to cancel your upcoming stay. We believe this is the right thing to do for Cooper's safety and comfort, and to provide you both with the best possible Rover experience."

How ironic for a company to say that when it also says "we do not endorse any persons who use or register for our Services, including Pet Care Service Providers. We do not investigate any user’s reputation, conduct, morality, criminal background, or verify the information that any user submits through the Services."

It appears to me that has more bark than bite. They want you, the pet owner, to use its service and to make you feel confident about its service, but it doesn't investigate. But if you are a pet care giver and Rover decides to drop you, beware the emails it might send out to your friends and neighbors. In particular, the former pet care provider who tipped me off to the problems at Rover had more than 60 "5-Star client reviews" over a two-year period, and 80% of her clients were repeat customers which is very unusual and admirable in the business.

Woof, woof Rover.

Update September 16, 2013  I recently found out these animals existed.  Miniature Horses are tiny horses with all the of characteristics of a horse even though they are smaller than "ponies."  Miniature Horses are usually about 28-inches to 30-inches high though some are as tall as 34-inches which is still smaller than some breeds of ponies.  They can be house pets and service animals but because they are horses they do need open space to run and exercise.  Yes, they can be trained and are very intelligent and friendly and can even be house-broken but they can't remain indoors for extended periods because as horses they need to be outdoors and have open space.

Here in Southern California they can be kept as backyard pets but do better in homes with large yards.  They can be boarded in stables and some do well with dogs and with full sized horses.  Need a gardener to keep your grass cut or weeds from taking over?  These Miniature Horses do the work.

Prices for a Mini are about $600 each and the cost of feed is three bales of hay a year -- or a nice big backyard.  They do require visits with a veterinarian for preventive medicine including vaccinations, and they can be hand-fed apples and bananas.  I've been told that they can be boarded in a stable for about $100 a month but I can't understand someone wanting to board a Mini and not have it in their home with their family as a household pet.  And so, if you don't have a large yard -- I don't think it's for you.

Mini Horses have a long life span, much longer than a dog's life -- and they can easily live 25 or 30 years.  There are several breeders in the Los Angeles area and some of breeders charge as much as $7,000 for a Mini Horse from champion bloodlines.  The photo below shows Miniature Horses in Lancaster, California north of Los Angeles.

Update September 3, 2011  Groomingdales was one of the first mobile pet grooming services offering professional at-home pet care and they've now been in business for more than 23 years.  The owner tells me that as their business continues to grow, personal care, professional service and customer satisfaction remain their top priority.

Groomingdales was a catchy name when Joanne started as a one-person operation 23 years ago.  She told me that It all started with one groomer, one van with the intent of repeat business through customer satisfaction.  "Convenient scheduling, commitment and magnificent grooming all from one person frantically booking appointments, servicing clients and maintaining a mobile operation quickly developed into a team of seasoned professionals. Over time, additional vehicles and an awesome staff evolved including Zelda, our office manager, who will assure your satisfaction and loyalty."

"To this day our objective remains the same – customer satisfaction. Your furry companion’s comfort is as important to us as to you. Our grooming staff is receptive to animal behavior and the unique personalities they possess. If you feel you were not delighted with the service in any way please call our office at 310-676-2626 or email us at and we'll make sure you're happy."

What impressed me was that when I saw their truck and asked the operator about the service, he answered my questions with enthusiasm.  And that's a sign of their company service.

Their prices start at $55.00 and go up depending on the size and coat of your pet. Call for a quote at 310-676-2626 or go to their website for information.

What pet owners don't like is bringing their pet to a groomer and then having to wait for service -- and more importantly -- have their pet wait to go home.  With Groomingdales you and your pet are spared that tension.

Update August 20, 2011  The Pets N Vets Animal Hospital is in Chino Hills with discounted pet services.  Pets N Vets is at 4200 Chino Hills Parkway, Suite 680, Chino Hills, in the Chino Hills Marketplace.  They offer low cost vaccines, Microchips and clinical services.  Call them at 909-597-1300 for information.
