Bankruptcy has become a necessity for many consumers and many families, and filing for bankruptcy has become widespread because of the lingering recession.  And so it became appropriate to give the subject of bankruptcy its own section on our website.  Here we will present information to help you sort out the subject of bankruptcy and to introduce you to the different types of bankruptcies.  I urge you to contact a professional to help guide you and your family.  In addition to the professionals that charge for their services, there are also free services.

Update March 17, 2016  When a family or an individual considers filing for bankruptcy a lot of questions come to mind.  What will happen to my pension?  What will happen to my house and car and my jewelry?  Will I lose that set of sterling silverware I inherited from my grandparents?  I have some emergency money in a savings account and will the court take it away from me?  How much does it cost to talk to a lawyer?

Well, that last question is easy to answer.  Many attorneys who specialize in bankruptcy will give you a free consultation.  That's something attorney Jeff Wishman emphasized to me when I interviewed him about bankruptcy.  I also asked him some of those other common questions and he told me that the bankruptcy laws can actually help you keep many of your assets -- perhaps even all of your assets -- while they can erase many of your debts immediately or over time.

A bankruptcy filing can also stop a foreclosure and give you more time to pay your mortgage -- and the bank can't do anything about it.  Jeff Wishman also discussed with me your life after bankruptcy including when you can buy a car again, when you can buy a house, when you can get new credit cards.  My video with Jeff Wishman is below and when you watch the video from our TV show please note that they have a new website and a new office address. Their new office address on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles is listed below. Their new website is and yes instead of a "dot com" this website ends with dot-lawyer.  In this video we discuss the most common questions and answers about bankruptcy.  And you can call his office at Bayer, Wishman & Leotta in downtown Los Angeles for a free consultation.

The biggest mistake consumers make when considering bankruptcy is avoiding a lawyer because you have no money.  And the attorneys at Bayer, Wishman & Leotta have a simple response to this: "Our first meeting with clients is a free consultation.  All of our clients can afford this."

And keep this in mind: when you hear lawyers and the news media discuss people and businesses filing for "bankruptcy protection" that is really what the law can do for you -- protect you.  It really can give you a fresh start and another chance and many businesses including car dealers and credit card companies will help you with that fresh start after you clear away previous debts with a bankruptcy.

Update March 17, 2016  Bankruptcy lawyers, as you might expect, have heard it all including all the ways people get into money trouble and are forced into filing for bankruptcy protection. Bankruptcy attorney Leon Bayer, one of the bankruptcy law experts at Bayer Wishman & Leotta, gave me some good ideas that will help you avoid bankruptcy:

1. Stay away from Pay Day Loans and other "desperation loans" because they can have interest rates near 185-percent. For more about these desperation loans click here.

2. Don't co-sign for anyone else's loans. Years ago a savvy relative told me that a co-signer is "an idiot with a pen." Read more about the dangers by clicking here. Being a co-signer on someone else's loans makes someone else's money problems your problem too.

3. Avoid debt settlement plans because they can be a waste of time and money. When you need money beware of business scams. And for more information -- which is free -- read this online book A Human Guide To Bankruptcy by clicking here.

The bankruptcy experts at the law firm Bayer Wishman & Leotta offer a free consultation and they have offices in Los Angeles, Long Beach and Encino, California. Call them at 800-477-3111 for your free consultation.
